Energy Saver - Scheduled startup not saved

I scheduled a startup, but it was not saved. When I reopened system preferences:energy saver:schedule everything had reverted to 0:00:00 and the check boxes are cleared.

I trashed energy saver prefs from both the system and user prefs for troubleshooting. Interestingly enough.... no new pref files have been created following changes to the energy saver settings.

Changes to display sleep time are saved normally, even though a new pref file is not created.

Ideas to correct the failure to save startup schedule issue? Thanks!

MacOSX10.3.8; G4 DP

It sounds like your PRAM battery is dead. I just had that exact same issue with a PMG4 I'm working with. Replaced the battery and everything was fine.

That information is stored on the motherboard in what is called the PRAM, or Parameter RAM, not in the system files. However, the PRAM does need a little bit of electricity to keep it in memory when the computer is off, which is why it has a battery. If the battery runs out of power, everything is lost from that PRAM.

Check your manual. It probably has directions for replacing the battery. You can get it at your local friendly RadioShack, Apple store, or battery store. (Actually, an unfriendly RadioShack is easier to come by -- might have more luck with that.)

Thanks for the suggestion. The PRAM battery is in good condition, 3.69v. I zapped the PRAM, problem is still present.... :(

Additional trouble shooting just completed:

I have a clean install of the OS on another drive which I use for maintenance. IF I start from that drive then Energy Saver works properly, saving settings. Therefore, it does not appear to be a hardware problem.

I replaced the EnergySaver Pref Pane with the copy from the clean drive. Problem remains.

Historical thought ... several months ago I installed then removed iBeeZz. Any known breakage of the MacOS from an iBeeZz trial?

Convoluted solution: Set chosen Startup Time, leave window unlocked, switch from Schedule tab to Sleep tab, then close System Preferences window. Following this protocol the chosen Startup Time perseveres.

I'd certainly like to discover and replace whatever corrupt file is causing this strange behavior!

Unfortunately, the convoluted solution above ... did not persist through actually restarting the machine. It did not restart and upon examination of the Energy Settings for Schedule this morning they have once again reverted to a clear check box and time 0:00:00 I am out of ideas save for a complete system reinstall which just wouldn't be worth it to resurrect this feature.

Thanks to Cheryl for pointing out that the drive must physically be in the Master position in the drive chain in order to restart the computer. My startup drive which was giving me fits was in the physical slave postion, moving it in the drive sled to the master postion solved the problem. Thank you Cheryl!!
