signed up for qwest hi-speed and couldn't get ethernet light on the modem.

borrowed an imac 600/125 ram/ 10.2
entered same settings and it connected with qwest setup right away. Moved the cable back to my machine and no light.

Looks like my ethernet port is broke. Openning the machine the port is behind a blk plastic cowling and looks like it goes into the motherboard, not a card.
What are the options?
 
If the ethernet port is truly dead, then you can simply add a Mac-compatible, cheap, ethernet PCI card to your machine (provided you have a free PCI slot), like this one from D-Link:

Mac OS X supports a few NIC chipsets, and I found that an Intel-branded card from my work was recognized and usable under OS X 10.4, as well as another generic, no-name ethernet card. If you have one of these network cards around, it may be worth popping it in as it could possibly be recognized.
 
after determining I probably had a dead ethernet port I picked up a d-link pci card at the apple store, installed the drivers and plugged in the modem.

getting more lights than ever:
dsl- steady green
internet- steady red
ethernet- steady green

Several boots of computer and modem later, plus variations on sys pref/network, I still can't get into the setup server, much less on to the Internet.

by the way, since my original ethernet port showed up in sysprof even though it wasn't working, now that I have an additional pci ethernet card, shouldn't it show 2 ports?
 
Yes, it should -- go into "Network" in the System Preferences again, and pull the "Show:" menu down to "Network Port Configurations". Check to make sure that the new PCI ethernet card has a check next to it, and also is at the top of the list.
 
sys pref/network only lists "built-in ethernet"
I don't know how to tell if that is the original broke port or my new pci card

if that is the original port, how do I configure to the new card?
 
"Built-in ethernet" is the internal ethernet port.

I just noticed that you said that you installed drivers -- no drivers should be necessary... it should be "plug and play." I would recommend removing the drivers and see if that gets it to show up in the Network pane.

What exact brand and model of card did you purchase?
 
dlink dfe-530tx+
10/100Mbps PCI adapter
it lists it has compatable drivers for Linux, netware, mac, and ndis2

I'm thinking the computer is not seeing the new card.

Ouch! That is strange -- I've got an old PowerMac 7600 with a G3 upgrade card running 10.4.3 that sees and utilizes the card perfectly.

I apologize for recommending a card that does not work in your system! It is rather strange!
 
In Network Prefs, set Show to Built in Ethernet, select Using DHCP, Apply, then change Show to Network Status.
Is That where you were getting Red?, you were a bit unclear, just said lots of lights. What color is that dot next to Built In Ethernet?

bummer about the card you bought; says 10.x.x, but no good on 10.4? take it back!
 
I want to thank the form for its help a week ago.
I took the dlink pci card back and ordered a Dynex E101 for $10 off Ebay.
It arrived today and 10.4.5 recognised it immeadiately, so I'm up and running at hi-speed.
 
Glad to hear you finally got it working! I still have no idea why the D-Link didn't work, but it's nice to know you got a replacement that works.
