External Hard Drive not showing up

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. I just noticed that the icon was not showing up on my desktop. This could have been the case for awhile, i don't use it that often just as storage. I have restarted, unplugged and replugged many ways. I can hear it running and the light is on. It does not show up in the system profiler, I have reset the PRAM. I have not as of yet got new cables to try as this was discovered last night. Is there anything else I can try until i get new cables? or what does this sound like to you. Also, what are the chances that the information on my drive is gone? This is the only copy i have for some work that i do.

hey, i'm having exactly the same problem with my western digital external hard drive. I noticed it had stopped recognising the disk while it was still plugged in - as I used it earlier that day.

I have used disk utility, and have an 'invalid sibling link', I'm not too worried if I need a new hard drive but have a lot of work on it so would like to know if I can back it up.

Thanks

LISAB-CM--- ARE YOU RUNNING THE DRIVE THRU A USB HUB OR DIRECT TO MAIN HD?
IF YOU ARE RUNNING THRU A USB HUB, TRY PLUGGING IT INTO A DIFFERANT HUB CONNECTION. ALSO IF YOU HAVE ANY ROUTER IN THE SYSTEM CONNECTIONS-TRY RESET THE ROUTER.
Just some ideas from me.--sorry about the caps printing-oops-my bad-
