If I save a movie on my external hard drive from my mac can i plug it in and play it on a pc? Will the pc even show my saved items on my external hard drive?

That depends on what format the external hard drive is in.

Do a "Get Info" on the external hard drive (highlight drive, press command-i) and check the "Format" section -- if it's FAT32, then yes. If it's "Mac OS Extended" or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" then no (or not without special software on the PC).

I've got a WD passport external HD myself and you can definitely use it for both pc and mac. you'll need a program for your PC that will able you to see and interact with the mac formatted stuff. Personally I like Macdrive, http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ there is also TransMac and.. oh idk go with macdrive IMO
