Finder & Itunes Dates do not change

I bought a MACBOOK Pro in January 2010 and it was registered the 5th of the same month.

After that all files in FINDER show a creation, modification and added dates of 1/5/2010 even though I copied older files from my previous Laptop.

I have the same situation with Itunes.

I can not organize and sort effectively none of my files since the only thing that changes in the DATES is the TIME. Date always remains fixed at January's 5th 2010 for all files.

Please help me in this matter.

Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure what the mystery is here? That's when the files were new to that OS on that particular HD. What happens if you add a file today?

The System Preferences shows the format used to display file dates and times in the Language & Text pref pane, then the Format tab.
Jan 5 2010 is the default used to show the format since Snow Leopard, so you are unlucky enough to have setup that day, because, in a bad coincidence, that was the day you began using your Mac.
Likely that you entered that date manually in that pref pane, which just uses that date as a sample.

Reset your prefs by opening your User/Library, then Preferences folder. Drag the file named com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the trash.
Then, logout, then log back in to the same user - or simply restart your Mac.
Now, check your files for the listed dates. It should now show dates other than 1-5-2010

Hello,

Djackmac: The thing is that even if I add/create a file today it will still show hat it was created January's 5th 2010 in Finder & Itunes.

DeltaMac: Thanks so much for the help. I deleted the com.apple.systempreferences.plist and I can see dates changing from yesterday and today, though I still do not know what to do with old files.

Both: Any idea of what to do about old files?

:)
