Have we played with this idea before?

OS X without Aqua.
Don't get me wrong, I love Aqua, but it is slowing the system down a tad. What if Apple made all those fancy things optional?
Think of it, the speed of 9 with the stability of X...

hmm, sounds like the latest dilemma i am having in deciding which browser to use. I just tried the new version of Opera and it looks sweet like omniweb - lots of aqua now. but both of them are slower than icab which still has some rough look to it? which to use?

i know i wouldn't want to give up my eye candy for the whole system but i can see how some would. makes sense to give the option. but making the eye candy work fast seems like the best deal of all.

Well, what do you mean by "Aqua"? You mean the finder? Just get SnaX and replace the Finder with it. It's faster.

Or do you mean just ghe GUI elements and SFX? Well, there are tools to disable most of them, transparent menus, shadows, dock stuff etc. etc. but you will notice that most if this stuff is actually helpfull and not only eye candy once it is missing. Shadows for example. Try shadow killer and then again try to quickly indicate which window is over which....

It's the dilemma with EVERY app. I always would like to have more control over it, to deactivate what I don't like, but I guess Apple won't do that, it might confuse users. And even if you hide these options in some kind of "Root"-Panel, users might find it and might trash their system and then say OS X is a bad OS because they were able to do it. Such people exist...and they are many.

If only OS programmers could work a bit more like game programmers, where you can disable nearly every detail to get the game to a speed so you can run it. It would be great, still, I fear it won't happen...

does darwin have a gui? or is it all command line driven?

Please give a short overview of darwin and it's compatability with all my osx apps.

OS X = Darwin + Aqua

Darwin = OS X - Aqua

Darwin ^= CLI

Darwin + XFree + anyWindowManager = fasterButIncompatibleToCocoaAppsAlternative

I found a source to install Darwin (Not osx) on a PC. Anyone interested feel free to email me... evildan@mac.com

But it is possible... of course those wanting Darwin so you can install osx over it, should know it's not possible.

Wasn't thinking of Carraco, but that would work too... along with your Apple suggestion. I was speaking of my friend who use to work for Apple. He has all of the legal distributed software at his access still.

Now I've got a question about Sosumi .. that looks kinda cool but if I installed it, would all my apps look the same? IE, would Office v.X and Mail, and OmniWeb all look like Sosumi or would they still look aqua?

I will post some shots of it tomorrow.
Some aps look kinda messed up.:o :)
But it really is worth the try! Trust me!
