help
ive just booted my ibook, and all i see is a little folder with a blinking question mark and the smiley face???? how do i fix this???? i think it might have someting to do with the fact that i went to change the startup disk last night, but didnt restart after selecting it - i just selected it and shut down. i dunno.
please help
cheers

Have you tried booting with the system CD? Instead of doing a complete reinstall, you could probably just select the startup disk to the one you were using previously.

You might be able to use that one, or you could use the 'Software Restore' CD.

Also, have you tried holding up X when you started up? I think with the newer iBooks you could use that to automatically boot up in the X system you have installed. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know...

I think that's all you would need; all you're doing is using it to boot and then switch the startup disk.

I've never really had this problem, so I don't *really* know what to do, sorry. If someone reading this has had to boot up from a CD-

Wait; you wouldn't happen to have any version of Norton Utilities (or any other Mac disk repair utility) lying around, would you? You can boot up with that.

Super_Pup:

Just a reminder, you need to hold down the C key on the keyboard when you start your Mac. This will tell it to boot from the CD.

The hardware cd should boot too using the same procedure.

Let us know if you were able to solve the problem.

i ended up running the disk utility, and repairing the disk. it had an incorrect volume number or something i dont remember. now im working a-ok again. a question, though: in 9 there are some files (a few k in size, called var & temp and a few others) that presumably are used by X. is it advisable or not for me to hide these? my dad thinks they get in the way when he uses 9, so he wants me to hide them. good or not?

Gimme a quarter for every time ppl asked me this and I'd be a millionaire. You shouldn't tamper with those files, no matter how innocent. If you do, you'll have a big chance of your computer NOT starting up under Mac OS X anymore and ending up with reinstalling it.

Well, what if i dont have a mac os cd? I have a Fedora cd and I would like to use that but how do I when i turn on my ibook 4G i see a blinking ?mark and a :) face.

PLEASE HELP ME!

Also i know i have to hold down the C key on the keyboard when you start your Mac. But is that just for mac os and not Fedora?

More information: Macs now come in two types, older models with PowerPC processors and newer Macs with Intel processors.

Yours is a PowerPC machine. You need a version of Linux that is made for PowerPC machines. There are versions out there. One name I remember is Yellow Dog. You can Google for PowerPC Linux.
