Ok so heres the deal, I plugged in an external hard drive into my imac. then all the sudden it froze. I restarted it and all my desktop icons are gone, I cant open finder or the trash. The bar at the top of the screen that has the time is gone/ I have no idea what happened, or how to fix it. So if you have the answer, please be patient and speak like your talking to a child haha I am not a computer guy. Thanks

Then obviously the problem is with the external HD. I've seen plenty of bad HDs plugged externally or internally into good working machines making the machines freak out (this can be a challenge doing data recoveries off of bad drives). Usually as soon as you disconnect the drive, functionality is restored to the computer.

i unplugged it already and it didn't do anything. i think it might have put my icons in the trash along with things from the external hard drive. I don't know whats going on

Looks like the result of plugging in the external drive is that Finder is freaking out. Hit command+option+escape and a window will pop up. Click on finder and select relaunch.

i did but i got nothing hahaha. I know all my stuff is still on here, i just need to get it back to the way it was.

ok I got it, I clicked on the apple thing in the corner and updated my software and Im golden!!! thanks for everything guys!!
