illustrator resizing pics stop working C

For CS3 when placing a photo, ive lost the option to directly resiize through using the mouse and shift key (i can now only right click as such and transform/scale

white boxes used to let me directly resize photos, but now a solid blue ouline is there when directly selecting the photo (eps, jpg etc)

any help appreciated for a entry level new designer!
 
Hi
Are you using the direct selection tool to select the box? This tool (one with white filled arrow) does not allow dragging the corners to resize. Try clicking on the black filled arrow (selection tool) and doing it?
