Inbox is (Read Only)

Why would my inbox suddenly become Read Only? I am unable to delete messages from it. I should mention that I am ABLE to delete messages from my SENT mail. I don't remember doing anything to effect this change, though I had been having password problems for several days with my email provider.
 
try to first repair permissions on your volume for disk utility... you can find this app in Applications/Utilty/Disk Utility, then select the First Aid Tab, select your volume and click on repair permissions...
