Installing Tiger on iMacG4 - wont install?

Hi, I have been trying unsuccessfully to install Tiger 10.4 (27691-5305A) onto my iMac G4 with no luck whatsoever?
I have tried just about everything including erasing the whole drive (using Norton Utilities as well as Tiger install disc) the install process gets 100% past the 'Base System part 1' but gets part way through 'Installing essentials' then generates an error 'software error - restart' wndow. And no matter how many times I go through this loop nothing has worked.
I'm installing 10.3 back again !
I also installed 10.3 onto an external drive which booted up my iMac no problem, so I tried to install Tiger onto this drive (using archive + install) and this genarated the same error as trying to install Tiger onto my iMac!
Anyone have any ideas what might be going on/wrong?
Thanks for any help on this -its driving my crazy
ps. My iMac G4 has 700+Mb RAM installed and plenty of disk space.

Got any 3rd-party RAM in there? Try removing all but the Apple-supplied RAM and see if that helps. If it does, you may be able to replace the RAM once you get a good, clean installation of Tiger going.

All the RAM was fitted by the AppleReseller I originally bought the iMac from - so I am guessing it would be Apple supplied? But on second thoughts I suppose if the reseller could source cheaper RAM modules I suppose they would have used these rather than Apple sourced RAM modules? Will see what I can find under the hood????

I recall also reading recommendations that external drives be disconnected during install. I don't believe that this was anything like the Firewire drive debacle with 10.3.0, but I recall (in release notes somewhere, perhaps?) that it implied that in some cases, external drives could block installation.

Hi,
I think this issue is down problem to a faulty RAM module? I ran Apple Hardware Test CDR and this revealed an memory test error code: 2MEM/1/4-DIMM1/J20 which on my iMac DIMM1 is a 256MB module. I will have to now figure out how to change this - anyone know where I can find set of instructions??

Hi,
Finally installed a new RAM module to replace the factory installed module(not at all difficult to do!) then reinstalled Tiger 10.4.01- all working fine again now.
Norton Systemworks 3.0 crashes Tiger when using auto-antivirus???? Apart from that no other Applications problems - so far!

DO NOT USE NORTONS ON AN OSX SYSTEM.

search the forums for info. It can cause a number of problems.
