Our network has 12 macs attached. Yesterday one was identified as creating thoud=sands of IP addresses at a time in the main directory. Is this a virus or equipment problem?
 
Can you explain it a little more, please? What's the main directory you're talking about? How do you know it was creating IP addresses?
 
we have hundreds of ip addresses in our subset. the mac is somehow creating or pulling in thousands of ip addresses, calling them in active and clogging up the log.
 
So when you view the Mac's Network IP settings, you see hundreds of IPs?
Where are you viewing them as "...active and clogging up the log."?
