Is the updater supposed to do kernel panicsc?

Hi, I just used the software update to check for updates and install 10.2.5. I left it alone to do its thing for a while, as I looked after the kids, and when I came back I had the kernel panic screen telling me in several languages to hold the power key down to reboot.

Am I right in assuming that this is not normal behaviour? Or does the software updater take it on itself to crash the machine?

I'm running an ibook, 700 MHz, 256 MB RAM, combo drive, purchased june 2002, using an airport.
 
has the panic repeated? was that before having installed 10.2.5? does 10.2.5 work normally (if you managed to install it)?
