ive converted a file to mp4 which plays fine though quicktime but when played through itunes there is no sound, what am i doing wrong?

Open the movie with Quicktime, then do a "Get Info" from within Quicktime (command-i). You should see what format the audio and video track are in.

MPEG4 is simply a "guideline" with which to compress audio and video. There are a number of different "types" of MPEG4 types in use:

"codec" = "format."

H.264 is the MPEG4 variant that the video is encoded in. AC3 and AAC are the audio formats.

iTunes should be able to handle H.264 video with AAC audio. What application did you use to convert the video, and what was the original video source?
