Leopard Installation gone bad & Partitioning???

A friend of mine and I went in on a family pack for leopard. He seems to have been able to upgrade with no problem. I thought I was able to. I got through just about everything (even accepting the free 60-trial of .Mac). When it went to my desktop though, I got a beachball of doom. I was told at the local Apple store to back up all files and do a clean install of Tiger and then Leopard.

I now see that I need to partition my HD as I had to with my PC. I would have rather not had to risk losing data and indeed lose a lot of time. My question is, how much space should I dedicate to the OS? 10 GB? 15? 20?
