Linux/Fink/ETC questions

I want to try out linux on my mac.

Couple of questions.

I know about Fink. Is there any other way I can play around with linux on a separate partition?

Can I just install Mandrake linux PPC version on a seperate partition and dual boot?

Any recommendations or websites would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

<<Mandrake Linux PPC can coexist with MacOS, and MacOSX. The yaboot bootloader will allow you to select any of the above OS's at boot, as well as setup a default OS for automatic startup. BootX is provided to initiate the install, as well as boot your final Linux installation on the OldWorld machines.

You will need either a spare disk drive with an Apple partition map setup, or free up some addtitional space on your existing hard drive. For best results, keep the Apple OS(s) at the beginning of the drive, allocating free space at the end of the drive for Linux.>>

Sao, thanks so much. I just wanted to make sure that mandrake had the same/similar boot loader to yellow dog, which i already knew could dual boot most recent macs.

lethe- hehe. As far as linux and my comment,what I mean is that I wanted to play around with various unix/linux software on my mac. KDE, etc. I understand that fink isnt linux, but for the purposes of my comment I figured that my intentions were understood :).

Without getting into some kind of arguement, because I am by NO means a linux expert, I am fairly sure that fink has plenty to do with linux/unix.

The Fink project wants to bring the full world of Unix Open Source software to Darwin and Mac OS X. We modify Unix software so that it compiles and runs on Mac OS X ("port" it) and make it available for download as a coherent distribution.

So unix isnt linux, but they are very, very similar. I consider the terms/names interchangeable, at least for my purposes.

no sweat. i sort of misread the question i guess. i thought you were going to install linux, and use fink on it, or use fink to install linux.

those are both impossible of course, fink is OSX only.
 
Linux is a free Unix-type 'operating system'.

Fink is a free 'package manager' of Unix software for MacOS X.
