Major issue!!

So I've got my 13" macbook that I bot back in 2007. Running OSX 10.4. The thing was working beautifully... until now. The other day, I plugged in my mbox 2 mini (recording peripheral) and the system froze (something that happens once in a while). Usually, I'll just restart the laptop and everything will be fine. Not this time.

When I booted the macbook back up, it took about 7-8 minutes (and it takes this long every time i boot it up). When it finally did boot up, some programs ceased to function properly. These programs were: MSN Messenger, Quicktime, Pro Tools, iTunes, VLC Player, Photo Booth. What'll happen is if I start up one of those programs, the program will boot up then lock up for a second then close itself and I get a message saying "Program has encountered a problem and needs to close" or "The application quit unexpectedly". Stuff like iCal, Azureus (bittorrent client), Safari and Firefox work fine. It seems to be only media related programs that are malfunctioning.

Even when plugging in my flash drive, the system freezes for a bit when I open up the drive's folder, locks up for a second then closes itself. Which is a bummer because I can't back anything up if I need to reformat.

I've tried reseting PRAM. I've tried repairing the disk (it just gives me an error when its verifying). I've tried that hardware test from the OSX disk, everything's fine. I've run out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Tried going into safe mode (holding shift after the chime), but it just stays on the apple screen, the gears dont show up.

Update! - Ok so Safari will "unexpectedly quit" on me if I have multiple tabs open. It also seems the general speed of my laptop is somewhat slower.

Start your computer from the original system disc holding down the "d" button for diagnose mode. It sounds to me that either the harddrive or one of the RAM pieces are at fault.

I'll try it, but if it was a hardware problem, wouldn't the hardware test detect it?

EDIT: "Diagnose Mode" is the hardware test that I did... anyone else have any ideas other than reformatting? Really I just wanna get my flash drive working so I can back stuff up.

Can't even use that network sharing feature (same problem, system preferences closes when I click on "Sharing"). Do you guys think that if I install OS X over my current installation, it'll help fix it?

Let's reset System Preferences. Navigate to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and find the file com.apple.systempreferences.plist and delete it. Then Try System Preferences again to see if that fixes the problem.
