Making an icon bounce in my dock "on event"

is there a way to make a dock icon bounce upon an event (i.e., Mail icon bouncing on receipt of a new message)? I know Adium has it as a preference, but can I make it happen manually?
 
Th only way is to run the program (you want to have "bounce" in the dock) but then hide them. Yes they will run, but with hardly any memory loss for the system (unless it is a poorly written program).
 
i'm not sure I follow. I'd like to see my Mail icon bounce once when I receive mail. That way, if I have my computer open but the volume down, I can be aware that I've received a new message.
