Memory question. Fragmentation?

PowermacG4_450

OS X Jaguar
Under 9, as you open and quit a series of programs, the unused portion of your macs memory tends to become fragmented into several noncontigous blocks.

Since os X apps have protected memory (space), can fragmentation still occur?

I was wondering this yesterday... im curious. :)

thanks.

I just read in another thread recently that OSX does memory compaction, taking all the little bits of used memory and grouping them together to make a large contiguous block of free memory.

Fragmentation was purely a product of OS 9's antiquated memory management. It's a non-issue in OS X.
