Would this have anything to do with a var file existing in the volume? Maybe from disk utility etc rebuilding. See attached snapshot.........
If I delete the var in volume would this operation then work as it wouldnt be trying to replace another?

What is inside that var folder? Can you have a look? Also as root, enter-
'cd /'
'ls -la'
This will let us know the contents of the root directory on your drive
Dont delete anything just yet

Hi Ed

So according to that, everything is in its place and should work, does it boot?
If not try install and run Applejack-
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
Install via FW connection, reboot Mac and hold down command S, once at command prompt type - applejack, follow onscreen instructions to run repairs.

Hi Ed,

Still not booting up, just the now very annoying welcome graphics with accompanied music greets me.
As you say all looks ok but as the deleted var file in question has never moved due to permissions etc is the var file in the volume a new version? Is deleting the new var folder an option then the one in the trash may then move?

Have tried Applejack but it wont let me install on a mounted drive only on a boot volume!

:D:D
Moved out current var folder in volume as I thought this was a new one created through running disk utility/disk warrior etc after problem arose.

Tried the mov var procedure but still not moving it.

Ran disk utility and hey presto it repaired/the symbolic link despite never finding it before. Laptop starts up and all working.

Thanks to Ed for all the help and tips you sent me. Much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark..
