Modem sound on iMac

Hello all.
This is my first time on this board. I have been a mac user for 8 years now.
I have a problem with my iMac 600SE which has been there since I bought it almost a year ago.
When I am connected to an ISP with the internal modem I get a noise that sort of rumbles (noise) at low volume that comes through either the internal speakers or the sound out. This annoys me as I have a high quality stereo system which the iMac is connected to through RCA cable. It is quite noticeable and fluctuates as I click on menus and move things around the screen. Like it stops for a split second when I click on a menu.

I had the 266 iMac before and I never had a problem with that. Has anyone ever had this problem and is it likely to be a modem fault or a software fault. I am running macosx 10.1.4.

cheers
