my sounds aren't sounding

my user interface sounds are working. either through headphones or internal speakers. by sounds i mean like the moving something to trash, emptying trash, new mail... itunes works fine as do sounds from websites and quicktime. i've tried working within 'sounds' on system preferences but nothin'. anybody have similar experiences or ideas?

Thanks Tom but that didn't seem to work. I'm not sure if this matters but I'm still able to play midi files through quicktime. It seems to be only the interface sounds that are not sounding. I was using Audacity the other day. Might that have been the cause?
