Norton AntiVirus beta for osx

norton has released an AntiVirus beta for osx that is good for 30 days. anyone can use it, no prior purchase required. since virex is on my wish list right now, i'm getting this to tide me thru. You can too, at
macupdate or direct from symantec . personally i am po'd about the huge runaround i got when i wanted to purchase an upgrade to systemworks directly from their site without waiting for rebate (like windows users can with a click) but this is free and you too might want to try it. hard to imagine it's going to beat virex though.

OK, so NAV 8b2 comes with an UNINSTALLER for b1 ... I followed the instructions (dragged script to Terminal Window and entered my password). Terminal said I DONT have permission (I AM the Administrator). Help!?

[UPDATED ON 3/11/02: PLEASE READ MY POST (BELOW) REGARDING UPGRADING TO NAV 8.0 for OS X]

... that you navigated to /Application/Utilities like the Read Me asked you to? That might be the problem.

If not, then type "sudo " (with the last space) and THEN drag the file onto the terminal window. Then type your password at the prompts. That should basically give you root access, although if you don't feel comfortable doing this, I don't blame you.

Sounds like a permissions problem somehow.

I don't use virus scanners, I know not to download and run those porno site and email attachments. :)

We have version 7.02 and it works fine.

Why do we need to have another version of NAV now? Are they going to pull out the definition list support to 7 when 8 goes final?

not likely. i still get 6 updates now. i doubt i will lose those either. especially since norton charges for the subscriptions after one year. would be tough to tell someone you're not going to provide them with the product they paid for. at this point i don't expect i will renew anyway.

7 isn't osx native is it? that would be the biggest reason for 8 i think. I still think i would rather have virex so far. NAV seems much slower.

I have never used a virus scanner on a Mac and in 17 years I got one virus and that was 12 years ago. OS X is not fast enough yet, I don't need some utility sniffing through each file I open or save. That is one of the banes of Windows PCs is the absolute need to run a/v software. I admin about 60 PCs, all with McAfee or Norton AV software and it really really bogs down the P4s running at their 1.7ghz speed. Turn the stuff off and it is like a brand new speedy machine.

if you think porno sites and email attatchments are the only way to get viruses, then you are being naive. The only virus i have ever picked up in over 15 yrs. came from an app i downloaded from an educational server. I have read in other forums about people who have gotten them with commercial apps. I don't scan everything as i get it, but i like knowing that i can check for this when the mac-chine starts doing weird stuff so that i can rule it out as potential cause or just once every month or so for peace of mind.

yea, constatn scanning and checking is a big waste on a mac. We get so few viruses that checking everything as you download probably costs you more downtime over the long haul, than reformatting and restoring your machine would if one ever did hit you. but having the app to run overnight or in the background every so often seems like a good idea to be on the safe side.

Just to clear something up: NAV 7.0.2 WAS carbonized. You just needed to download the 7.0.2 "Update" installer which made sure you had a previous version of the Classic NAV 7 installed, and then it would install a carbonized version of NAV 7.0.2.

NAV 8 seems to be just an update to make sure that it is compatible with OS X. You know how Norton Utilities suggests that you don't begin filenames with periods? Well that's basically a dumb suggestion in OS X, because renaming all those filenames so they don't have a period at the beginning will make them all visible. Bad idea. I bet there are similar problems with NAV 7, even though it seems to work pretty well. However, I doubt that it merits the 8 version number. To me, it seems like more and more companies are just releasing minor upgrades to things and giving a major version number upgrade (AOL being the company that does this the most -- just look at Windows AOL and ICQ for Mac).

If any of you guys want the carbonized installer for NAV 7.0.2, I can put it up somewhere. Note that it is similar to the OS X update CD, in that you have to have a Classic version of NAV 7 installed before you can install NAV 7 for OS X. I'm not sure if there's a similar CheckforOSX file, though. ;)

OK, so this week Symantic released NAV 8.0 for OS X. I am considering upgrading from 7.0 and want to know what you all think. So far, it appears that the only new features are:

"Norton AntiVirus™ For Macintosh® 8.0 is the world's most trusted antivirus solution for Macintosh systems. It works automatically in the background to find and remove viruses — without interrupting your work.

• NEW ! SafeZone and AutoProtect automatically isolate and scan all downloads, including email attachments and file transfers.
• NEW! Native support for Mac OS X (and other versions 8.1 and later)."

But wasn't 7.0 native?! Maybe not?

Anyway, the SafeZone and auto-scan features are GREAT (and perhaps worth the upgrade ...although ... Macs don't get viruses often enough to warrant expensive upgrades).

Hmmm.....

Like I said in my previous post, GadgetLover, 7.0.2 WAS carbonized. I still have the installer somewhere.

But I don't think Norton AntiVirus 8 is worth the upgrade (I didn't even hear it was released). Not until I start getting a lot of viruses, which is probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Actually, I'll probably be able to get a free version from Stanford soon. :)

I hope I get a free copy of Norton Utilities 7 for Mac OS X for submitting bugs, though. That would rock.

That's why I posted my Q ... I was expecting more from this "upgrade." I want the SafeZone feature buuutt....

that's steep for such a small improvement!

:(

I have nav 7.0 for os9 and when i downloaded the osx i liked it. So what im asking is will they have a update from 7.0 to a macosx version?

I just went to the web site and dl the 7.02 update and its for os 9 not os x. Can you send me a link where u saw the update from 7 to osx. thanks

All I can say is that I have the actual Symantic NAV 7.0 CD and it has BOTH on it. If you are an actual owner, you should have both versions (9 and X) on the CD. If you have an older CD (before they had the OS X version) then you should call Symantic and have them send you a new CD.

I'll look around to see if I have an update laying around though ....

So it looks like versiontracker.com isn't carrying the 7.0.2 X updater, so I've posted it on my iDisk.

Here's the direct link:

http://homepage.mac.com/simx/.cv/simx/Public/NAV X 7.0.2 Updater-binhex.hqx

If that doesn't work, you can go to http://homepage.mac.com/simx/FileSharing1.html and initiate the download manually from there.

I'll leave this up as long as I can, but if I run out of space on my iDisk, it's coming down (which probably won't be anytime soon).

By the way, this is a full installer, but only works when it detects a Classic version of NAV 7.0.2 installed.
