Odd Network Prefs Behaviour

I'm working with my girlfriend's computer, and it has one peculiar, annoying habit of dropping our wireless network from time to time. It is a 14" iBook G4 1.33GHz with 512Mb RAM. Also from time to time, it likes to switch to our neighbor's network without warning or prompt.
I started to investigate, and found more peculiar clues. I figured it probably had something to do with the Preferred Networks list in the System Preferences pane, but when I switched from "Automatic" to "Preferred Networks" no list of networks appeared. in fact even when I did get the box (which normally contains the list) to appear, there were no networks listed. The + button is dead (it clicks, but does nothing), the - button is grayed, and even stranger, the "Options..." button at the bottom of the pane is dead. Nothing else on the computer seems to be amiss. Any thoughts on what's going on / a cure?

Thanks,

-Eric!

Hmm... what is your wireless name? Do you have WAP enabled or MAC address filtering turned on via the router? What router are you using?

When you do connect - if you click on the wireless symbol - does it tell you what connection you are using?

The name of the network is FACE, and we have enabled password protection, but not a MAC filter. Our router is a Belkin54 wireless router - but here's the weird part - nothing strange happens on MY computer (a PowerBook G4). Just on the iBook. When I clik on the wireless symbol, I can connect to the FACE network, but every so often (randomly, i guess) it likes to drop the network and pick up someone else's (and never the same one, either). The iBook is showing some other odd behaviour, specifically some strange contextual menu behaviour in EXCEL only, and when I run a "Verify Disk" off the install CD, it says there is a bad "leaf record count - should be 0 not 29" could that have anything to do with such specific odd behaviour?

Search this site for sbin/fsck -y -f and follow that procedure.
I hate to say panacea, but it has been for me.
First thing I try when strange things happen.

Do you have diskwarrior? Do you repair your permissions and/or optimize your disc? ever Run Disc Utility?
all good things to do!
