First of all I wanted to thank edesignuk for the pc/mac networking guide found here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=54704). It was a total lifesaver for us mac newbies.

That being said, I was hoping to get some help with a networking issue. I am connecting a Win 2K laptop (SP4) to my new Mac Mini. I went thorugh the steps in the networking thread (very, very carefully) and the end result is that my PC can connect to the Mac, but the Mac can't connect to the PC.

I was able to find the mac by searching computers in the network, and adding the mac to my links. For example, I can open word files saved on the mac desktop from the MS Word program on my PC, BUT... I can't open, see or connect to anything in the PC from the Mac.

I have tried every possible combination and configuration as outlined in the "Accesing your PC from your Mac" step on the networking instructions page, and I cannot get the Mac to connect to the PC.

I get these erros
1) When I click Go > Connect to Server using smb://ipaddress on the pc
I get this error
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://ipaddress" could not be read or written. (Error code. -36)

2)When I click Go > Connect to Server
using afp://ipaddress I get:
Connection failed.
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the servername or IP address and try again.

I thought it might be a sharing or permissions issue but I tried these ways too and none worked.
1) Go > Connect to server
smb://ipaddress/computername/
smb://ipaddress/computername/sharedfoldername
smb://computername
smb://computername/sharedfoldername

I am connecting through ethernet cables, not wireless.
Any help would be much appreciated!

On my network, the PCs show up in the "Network" tab of finder, in a folder that is the name of the network. It might not be a bad idea to setup a network.
Also, Norton Firewall has causes many problems with networking, I would recommend disabling it and getting a free firewall, such as Zone Alarm, if you have norton.

AFP will not work to connect to PC's, by the way.

You are connecting to the PC via local IP (192.168.x.x), correct?

Thanks for the hint. It got me one step closer but still no solution.

In the network folder, I am able to see a folder which has the name of my PC workgroup (Lets imagine its called HomeNT). However, there is nothing showing inside these folders. No PCs to be found.

When I go to the network tab I can see 2 folders and 2 shortcuts
MyNetwork(folder)
HomeNT(folder)
Servers(shortcut)
Library(shortcut)

I was hoping to see my PC on either one of the folders, but nuthing.
I have already set up a network in my computer. Several Doc Folders and directories are shared, and also the entire C drive. I doubled-checked that the names were not too long, etc. Zip. Nada.

I feel like I am missing one little step, any thoughts?

Are you sure you have no firewalls enabled? Also, have you restarted the 2k machine? Sometimes you have to restart to enable the new settings.
