First of all I wanted to thank edesignuk for the pc/mac networking guide found here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=54704). It was a total lifesaver for us mac newbies.
That being said, I was hoping to get some help with a networking issue. I am connecting a Win 2K laptop (SP4) to my new Mac Mini. I went thorugh the steps in the networking thread (very, very carefully) and the end result is that my PC can connect to the Mac, but the Mac can't connect to the PC.
I was able to find the mac by searching computers in the network, and adding the mac to my links. For example, I can open word files saved on the mac desktop from the MS Word program on my PC, BUT... I can't open, see or connect to anything in the PC from the Mac.
I have tried every possible combination and configuration as outlined in the "Accesing your PC from your Mac" step on the networking instructions page, and I cannot get the Mac to connect to the PC.
I get these erros
1) When I click Go > Connect to Server using smb://ipaddress on the pc
I get this error
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://ipaddress" could not be read or written. (Error code. -36)
2)When I click Go > Connect to Server
using afp://ipaddress I get:
Connection failed.
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the servername or IP address and try again.
I thought it might be a sharing or permissions issue but I tried these ways too and none worked.
1) Go > Connect to server
smb://ipaddress/computername/
smb://ipaddress/computername/sharedfoldername
smb://computername
smb://computername/sharedfoldername
I am connecting through ethernet cables, not wireless.
Any help would be much appreciated!
