Problems booting Mac OS X after Directory Rebuild by Disk Warrior.

Here we go...

My computer configuration:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version: 1.27f1
Mac OS X 10.5.6 (By the time the problem occurred)

I have an extra Max OS X 10.5.2 installed on an external HD that I use for situations like this.

I was feeling my MPB a little slower lately, was having some crashes with Transmission and Safari and I had a kernel panic (I am really getting used to that, it reminds me of my windows) and decided to run some tests and verifications.

Run Disk Utility verifications. Result: "Key out of order"

Decided to run Disk Warrior (That is installed in the OS on the external HD) to Rebuild Directory. Results: No problem, no files losts, everything ok.

Reboot to start Mac OS X on internal HD, the boot gets to the Apple Logo and loading and then restart again and repeat the process over and over.

The external HD boots just fine (I am on it right now).

Any suggestions?

Right now I will try to run Disk Warrior to check All Files and Folders. Will post the results shortly.

Try this:

  • Restart with [cmd] + pressed. This will boot your Mac in Single-User Mode, a commandline UNIX mode.
[*]At the command prompt, type fsck -fy. This will execute File System Check and force the journaled file system to allow edits.
[*]After you are returned to the command prompt, type exit. This will exit the commandline interface and boot the MacOS X GUI.

Tried that but all I got was a prompt but couldn't type anything there and in the end the computer restarts itself...

And it restarts and goes back to infinite boot-loop!

Do you see anything strange in this photo?

danijeljames: that doesn't help him.

tonycelestino: What was just installed when this started? Can you open Console? Check to see what it says in CrashReporter.

@danijeljames: I use transmission since the first week I bought my MBP, it never had any problems until now, I don't think my problem is related to that crash.

@Cheryl:

The last thing I recall installing was some finance applications demo. Squirrel and other two or three (don't remember the name of them).

I can open Console in the OS on my external HD or through Installation Disk. Will try that and report back later tonight. Thank you.

There is no Crash Report in my internal HD installation of Mac OS.

Here is the last Disk Utility log I did on my internal HD before the problem started:

2009-02-03 23:27:36 -0200:

It says the disk needs repair because of Keys out of Order. DU cannot repair by itself, so I try to use Disk Warrior.

After using DW and rebuilding the Directory I restarted my Mac and the problem started.

I think I will have to save my data to my external HD and erase my internal HD and reinstall the system.

I am so frustrated. Believe me its the eighth time I reinstall the system in eight months, the closest Apple Service Center is 5 hours away (BY PLANE). Im starting to think that I would be better off on the PC world, it crashed and it had a lot of errors but I never had so much problems with it.

Thanks for your help Cheryl, I really appreciate it.

Here is something new...

I was checking the Volume "Mac" (that is my internal drive), and this came up:

Code:
Startup File
This test checks the Startup file. The parameters within this file contain the information used by the computer ROM to determine what program will boot the computer as well as other system-specific aspects.
[B][I]Startup File <Not Present>[/I][/B]

So I think there's a file missing somewhere. Any suggestions?

No one has asked yet:
What version of Disk Warrior do you have? Latest and greatest is version 4.1.1, and that's the one you should have for Leopard. You may find that older versions may not fix your issues, or possibly leave you with an unbootable system on that drive.
If Disk Warrior does not help you, then you should suspect that your hard drive is failing.

Yep to what DeltaMac said.

Disk Utility doesn't finish the job because it say something that is not right.

You can try a re-install, but wipe the drive completely first. If you get the same problem again, the hard drive is failing to keep files where it belongs.

Yes DeltaMac, that is the version I have.

I already wiped my hd several times. I am pretty sure there is something really wrong with my HD and probably something else in the computer.

A real dissapointment for me since this is my first mac and I never had big problems like this with my PCs.

My last try will be taking it to the Apple Service and replacing it with a new one. I hope that works.

Thank you Cheryl for your support.

If this is a new machine you are under warranty.

Sometimes a machine - no matter what it is, car, appliance, computer - will have 'issues'. You just happen to be the lucky person to get that one in a million. (arbitrary number as I don't have the exact number). Once you get the machine working smoothly, you will like it. :)

Yeap, I still have 4 months of warranty. I just wanted to fix it without having to take it to the Apple Service, because it is very far away from where I live (5 hours by plane!).

You are right Cheryl, I sell Suzuki Motorcycles and although it is very rare sometimes we have issues with some of them.

Oh I love my MBP (when it is working of course). I was just frustrated and needed to get it off my chest.

I will let you know if the Apple Service worked out.

Just out of curiosity, does Apple exchange the computers with serious issues (I suppose my issue is a serious one) or they replace the inside parts?

Once again Thank you Cheryl for all the attention.

If you call Apple and give them the history of your problems, they should act quickly. If you don't get satisfaction with the first guy/gal, ask for a supervisor. I know that on some incidents they will send you a box or a label for shipping to the repair center.

As for replacement vs repair, I think it depends on the machine and the problem.
