How can i upgrade my imac g3's Mhz?

Can i add another internal hard drive to my imac g3 as storage? (the internal hard drive was for my emachines that mother board fried. It runs windows xp)

Can i turn an internal hard drive to an external drive so it can plug as a USB?

The OS is stored in the hard drive right?

Sometimes my imac g3 get hot on the top. Should i worry about this? (Every time it gets hot i turn it off for an hour or two cause im scared something is going to happen)

What are your iMac G3's specs ....

1. Depends ...
2. Yep ...
3. Yep ....

There are apps you can download that monitor the temp but I think it all boils down to you providing more details ...

How can I turn my internal hard drive into an external one? Do i have to buy certain wires? if so where from and how much would it cost?

Do i just open up my imac g3 and and they'll be a spot where i can just plug in an extra internal hard drive? Can my motherboard fries cause it can't handle a extra 60GB(it already has 80 gb)? Will it have enough room from two internal hard drives? Also that means that i can run windows and Mac on it cause my 60GB hard drive(I want to addon) has windows xp and my 80 gb(came with the imac) which is already installed has Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Sorry if its too much or confusing. I don't know much about computers. Thanks for your help!

You might be able to run Windows on your G3 using a program called Virtual PC.

I don't think it'd really be worth the hassle and you probably couldn't run XP.

Depending on your G3 model, VPC might run slow as molasses.

What model G3 do you have .... ? Go to the Blue Apple icon and choose "About this Mac".

Replacing the hard drive in an iMac isn't as straightforward as some other replacements. You may want to look at this guide to see what you're getting into:

http://www.faqintosh.com/risorse/en/guides/hw/imac/imacg3dvhd/

The iMac can only have one internal hard drive, so adding an extra one is out of the question. You can only replace the internal hard drive. You may also be limited to hard drives that are 128GB or less in size.

To turn an internal hard drive into an external one, simply purchase an external FireWire or USB case. Installing the hard drive into an external case is quite simple. You can choose from many different cases, such as these (you'll want the one that doesn't come with a hard drive):

No, you cannot upgrade the "MHz" of your computer, as the processor in the iMacs is non-replaceable.

You're going to want to find a Firewire enclosure, since your iMac's USB ports are 1.1 and very slow.

You can go to www.pricewatch.com and search for--> firewire hard drive enclosure

You can also try a major retailer, but the prices will likely be lower if you use pricewatch.

Putting your hard drive in the enclosure is not _that_ difficult. You'll probably need a screwdriver. You'll have to plug in the power (a white connector) and the data cable.

Post another message if you need help.

One thing about Firewire: When you go to plug in the Firewire cable, make sure you're plugging it in in the correct orientation. You can look at the plug and figure it out. I've read accounts of people who shorted out the port because they tried to plug it in backwards. (I guess that's why the connector is different for the newer Firewire 800.)

When you put your Windows hard drive in an enclosure, you'll have access to all your files, pictures, documents, etc. You'll be able to see your pictures, read your Microsoft Word files, and play your unprotected music. But you're not really going to be able to run Windows on your iMac. The VirtualPC emulator on my dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 was slow as molasses. Almost unusable. And your iMac will not run Windows programs without an emulator.

Of course, there's a whole world of Mac software out there, free and commercial. Try www.versiontracker.com and click on Mac OS X software at the top (if necessary).

And a refurbished Mac mini, that will be incredibly fast compared to your machines and run Windows (must be a full install disc of Windows XP Service Pack 2) at full speed is about $500. Just a thought. But the Mac mini will not boot from an external drive. You'll have to install Windows on an internal partition. Don't worry. Apple's software makes it easy.

Good luck and let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks! I'm not using the enclosure on my mac. I'm using it on my vista. When i put in my hard drive in the enclosure it won't make me format it right? Cause i need my files on the hard drive. Thanks a lot!!

Also

If i remove the hard drive on my imac g3 with Mac OS X 10.3.9 and replace it with my windows xp hard drive, Would it work?

No, it won't ask you to format it. You will be able to see your files as long as the hard drive is in the NTFS, FAT32, HFS+ or HFS format (which is it).

No, PowerPC Macs such as yours can only run the Mac OS (and some forms of Linux).
