Something weird just happened to my iBook...:
- strange stripes suddendly appeared on the screen, and then It went blank (black), It would not wake up so I kept the start button pressed for a while to make it restart....I heard then a fan noise, but It restarted properly....

What could it be?
(for info: the HD on this computer crashed and died 4 months ago and it was replaced with a new one).

It could have been a kernel panic or video crashing for some reason.
Has it done that before?

thanks....found the panic.log, here you go:

Wow you learn fast :)
You have had one kernel panic on your computer for some USB driver issue but that was on 22 February.
So probably this time the video froze, or the windowserver had something odd happening there, or there might have been some pressure on the video cable. Bottom line that if this has happened only once and will not repeat, I wouldn't worry too much.

MacOSX_kernel_panic.png

That's a OS X Kernel Panic. It's like the Blue Screen of death on Windows.

Has anything bad happened though like data loss?

The Doctor

1. No, I did not get this image on the screen, It just went dark...after the stripes, I think I was using Acrobat when this happened.

2. No, I did not have any data loss

Ok, not all bad then. It could happen again though. Yea it might be dodgy Motherboard, if you have ANY more info that is great!

I don't how recent version of OS X you need but did it come up with a error message after the restart saying OS X has a error or something like that?

The Doctor

It's an iBOOK 933Mhz Power PC G4 - OS X 10.4.9
I think it's not elegible for this Motherboard thing...

At restart, It made a short fan noise, but I got no error message, only a "recovered files" folder inside the trash.

The "Recovered Files" folder is very common for all OS X 10.4 users. It's just files from applications before the computer was shut down, restarted, logged out, etc. that did not make it to their destination and so they are in the trash. While there are rumors about what happens when you empty the trash, nothing bad happens.

As for the original problem, it might be a problem with the screen, as it showed stripes. Usual when you test the screen, it changes the screen to different shades of gray.

But, try that motherboard, and even if it wasn't the problem, what's the worst that can happen getting a new board?

Check out what is happen because Kernel Panics are most of the time caused by hardware failing/failed. Check out the logs in /Applications/Utilties/Console and look at the logs. They will tell why you had a panic. It is important you trace the problem down A.S.A.P. before the Mac completely dies, plus backup too.

this is what the panic.log says (although the crash hapenned at around 9pm and the report says 2:36pm) :
