Shutdown or Sleep?

Hello everybody,

I've heard advice that if you have a laptop (i'm on a powerbook) that you shouldn't shut your system down unless you really need to. You should all ways close the lid and let it sleep.

What's the reasoning?

convenience. that is all it is. the mac has no real reason to be rebooted, unless there's been a drastic change to the systems configuration, and the power consumption differences betweeen a sleeping mac and turned off mac is completely negligable. why wait 3 minutes for it to boot up when waking it takes less than a second? why close all your programs and apps andwait to shut the computer down when you can just close the lid?

I agree: convenience only.

However, I still shut down my G4 iBook every day. I do feel that rebooting does sometimes make it run a little better (and a tiny bit faster), because it frees up all the RAM, etc.

I also run the file system check in Safe Mode at least once a week, plus Applejack (can be found on versiontracker.com).
