Time machine unable to delete back up

I am trying to delete a file from a back up. The back up is from time machine and is on an external hard drive formatted to Mac Os Extended (journaled)
I have followed all instrcutions,
1. Open time machine
2. Select the file in the back up.
3. Click the gear icon and select "delete all backups of "XXXX"
I have also tried Delete back up.
Nothing happens, the comupter, macBook Pro, Snow Leopard, freezes. The only functional button is the esc key. Once it is pressed the computer functions.

I have tried repairing permissions on my hard drive, repairing disk on the external disk. Still the same.

Can anyone offer me any help ?

I'd have to say it sounds like your external drive is on its way out. If you just try and access it via Finder, does it seem a bit sluggish?

I have been able to delete other files from the hard drive no problem, the only issue is with Time Machine. I am the only user of the computer, administrator.
