Troubles mounting DVDs

Problem: Inconsistant success mounting archival DVDs

We use DVDs burned with toast on non OSX macs for Archival of our data. I have very inconsistant success mounting these DVDs (even the same DVD)... usually the disc will not mount but rather act like nothing is in the drive. Sometimes the disc will mount normally.

Setup: I have a dual 1.2Ghz mirror front running OS10.2.3

Thoughts: Anybody having conflict Toast burned DVDs? DVDs burned on "non" OSX macs? Data DVDs in general?

I have this problem with burned and music CD's on my beige G3, and I have no idea what the problem is either. I've looked, but I've come up short.
