I didn't think that Mac came with mysql but there is this one in usr/local/

mysql-max-4.1.22-apple-darwin8 6.0-powerpc

not knowing this I also installed a 5.0 mysql
so in the usr/local directory i have these two

mysql/ < - this one is an alias which appears to point to usr/local

mysql-max-4.1 22-apple-darwin8 6.0-powerpc/

is this suppose to be like this ?
should I delete both and do a new install ?

I was wanting to upgrade the mysql so I thought now is a good time to understand this out correctly before doing anything.

is it ok to remove mysql-max-4.1.22-apple-darwin8 6.0-powerpc ?
phpmyadmin shows a sever version 4.122 and a client version 5.0.24a

this is a little confusing to me

It's fine leaving the Apple installed one there because the one from Mysql installs in a different directory like you've found out. The control pane in System Preferences will start up the one you downloaded and there's really no reason to remove the Apple one. They do provide updates to it once and a while so it might break an OS update if it's missing.
