Hi all,

I managed to get my hands on an imac from my work, it is a flat panel has a side loading cd, it does not sit on a dome. It has tiger 10.4.11 installed. I would like to install iphone sdk on it and as such need to reinstall to 10.5.6 or more.

I have tried this using the 10.5.6 disk that came with my macbook, but it is not letting me. Could anyone advise me as to how i can install 10.5.6 (if i am able to at all).

Many thanks

Max

Hi maxwas,

You'll need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard (10.5.x) in order to install it on that iMac. The discs that come with specific Mac models only work with the models that they ship with.

If you go to the Apple menu on the left and select "About This Mac," you can find out what iMac you have in particular. It will show the processor your iMac has. You can also get more information from the aptly named "More Information" button :) which will take you to the System Profiler. Post that information here and we can better tell you the highest version of OS X that you can run on it. Also be sure to include the amount of RAM you have on it.

The OS X installer that came with another model Mac (a grey disk) will not install on your iMac. You need to purchase the 10.5 install. You can find a copy on eBay, or one of the other online retailers that offers OS X install software. The disk will be black.
You can also purchase the Snow Leopard installer, which is only $30.

Do you know for certain that your iMac has an Intel processor, and not the older PPC G5? The iPhone SDK requires an Intel processor.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

It is an intel core duo with 1.5g ram and a 150gb hd.

I can get my hands on a retail of 10.6, will this run ok?

Yes. As long as your hands got on it legally (i.e. -- you purchased it, rather than "borrowing" a copy from a friend).

The Mac OS X installer can tell exactly how you obtained the software, and will refuse to install if it was obtained in a less-than-legal fashion. ;)

You forgot to mention the installer, if it is the $25 Snow Leopard upgrade, can also check for a 10.5 Leopard install to upgrade.

Yes, 10.6 will run on that so you should be able to purchase a copy with no worries.
