What happened to all my HD space?

I just noticed today when I went to Disk Utility that 36.74 GB of my 37.26 GB are used up. Iv only had my ibook since Sept. I have very little music files, very little pictures, and no video files as far as I know. Iv only added a small bit of software. This quite shocks me. Anyone have any idea what could have happened? Is there at least a place I can go to see where all my space is going? Thanks for any help.
 
thanks for the replys. i know what caches are but i dont know how to find them. and i also dont know what swap files are.
is the disksweeper safe?
