Which OSX?

Can anyone tell me which OSX is suitable for a bog standard imac running OS 8.6 or 8.4 (! can't remember). It has a CD player which plays video, but I assume this is not the same as a DVD player?? - which means OSX 10.4 Tiger is not suitable, doesn't it.
Sorry if this seems tlike a silly quiestion but I am a beginner at this and can't seem to find the information anywhere else despite much searching.
 
Choose "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and give us a detailed rundown of what you see (ignoring the RAM usage bars)
 
So tell the specs of the iMac? Processor speed?
You'll need minimum 256 MB to run any recent OS X, but 512 MB would make it run significantly smoother...
