XServe 2.3 Ghz???

Well, the 'alt' text for the Xserve image is as it appears in the attached image. It apparently says 2.3Ghz, but the image says 2.0. There is a Macrumors.com forum thread that said that there was an image that had it posted as 2.3ghz (not just the Alt text).

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to post image. And this is on the www.apple.com site.

If it's the new 970 chip in the XServe, there might be issues with getting supplies. Maybe it was going to be 2.3 and got speed dumped (yes I bought a G4 in 1999) or maybe they're hoping to bump it up to 2.3 depending on how production of the new chip goes? Or maybe it's a typo.

It may be a Typo. However, the graphic on the Canadian Apple site (check www.macrumors.com / Page 2 news) had 2.3 as well. This leads to some possibility of a 2.3 machine around the corner. Sounds good to me.

no typo...its in the source of the site
<td width="170"><a href="/xserve/" onClick="adclick('/xserve/01062004','Promo - Xserve G5 - 01062004')"><img src="http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/0f8e263ebaa725/www.apple.com/home/images/2004/01/xserveg5_01062004.gif" width="170" height="125" border="0" alt="Xserve G5. 1U, 64-bit, G5 Processor Single or Dual 2.3GHz"></a></td>

Well, since the "typo" was both in the image as in the alt text the probablity is quite low that it would be a simple mistake. At other forums there have been hint's by those allegedly "in the know" that it is a foreshadowing of things to come and not a typo ... I don't know ... double typo's _are_ rare ...

But it wasn't, it was only in the alt. The G5 is due for a boost though, but I think someone might have typed it wrong.

It seems unlikely that the web designer for that site knows about new G5 speeds :p

Yes, but the image on the Canadian Apple website was also originally created with the 2.3Ghz designed into it. I think there could be a little more to this than just a typo. However, I am not going to assume anything.

Calm down, folks. :) Let's say the image was first. There was a typo of 2.3 GHz. Then someone copied the text to the alt-text. Later the images were replaced, but the alt-texts forgotten. Simple. One typo leading to more typoes.

However: It's quite clear that IBM will introduce the 90nm PowerPC 970+ in February at speeds of up to 2.5 or 2.6 GHz. It's also widely rumoured that the PowerMacs will be upgraded to those processors in the near future.

Ah yes, but why would the Candian site (also in English) use a different graphic than the Apple USA site?

Sorry to bring back this old thread, but Apple has updated their website today (22.01.04) to correct the 2.3 - 2.0 posted in the pic in the first entry on this thread.
Took them long enough :D

Well, it has been confirmed by Appleinsider and Macrumors that the G5 2.3 ghz's were made, but specially for Virginia Tech.

I knew I wasn't crazy.

It's been 'confirmed'. I'm waiting for a public announcement of some sort. Is nobody near Virginia Tech? A simple profiling of one of the machines could show us!

it has been a know fact for some time now that virginia tech received 2.3ghz x serves specially made for them. for those of us who read rumours and news sites everyday this is not News...
there is no Xserve 2.3 being sold for the rest of us, at least not right now...

what im interested in seeing is a comparison between the System X and Mach 5 :)

it will be nice to have them both in the list of 10 fastest Supercomputers :)

System stabilization has been going on for over 60 days now. I think the first run last year they had stabilization and benchmarking completed in 17 days... hope everything is going ok. I know the military was over there a week or more ago.
