    external hard drive general questions

We don't know what kind of Mac you have. You will get no benefit from a firewire 800 if you don't have a firewire 800 port. Also, if you build your own drive, then be sure that the enclosure you choose supports booting. Apple "insists" that firewire drives should be disconnected when...

    Archive & Install Questions

Using a firewire drive, as suggest by fryke, is an excellent idea. Tiger has these options--erase and install (clean install), archive and install and/or preserve user and network settings, and update. I lke the LaCie Porsche design firewire 400 250 GB--about $200 (much bang for the buck). You...

    Archive & Install Questions

I installed Tiger 3 ways on an external firewire--including using archive and install/preserve user and network settings (A/P. On my AP installation, all my apps were automatically placed in my new "Applications" folder, except for older versions of apps updated in Tiger. I did not have to do...

Tiger Upgrade - will it keep iLife??

Any apps that can't be custom intalled via your Panther disks can be restored using Pacifist assuming it is Tiger compatible enough. The last time I looked there was no mention of Tiger-Pacifist compatibility. You might want to consider doing an archive and install/preserve user and network...

    external hard drive general questions

Firewire is the answer. Even firewire 400 is better than USB 2.0 on all dimensions except for burst speed--which doesn't matter. And, you will need a firewire drive if you want to boot from your external. Most, but not all, firewire drives are bootable. So, be sure you buy one that is bootable...

    Memory Slots in iBook G4

You have 1 RAM slot for expansion and a soldered in 256 MB stick. You can use PC2100 DDR266 200 pin SO-DIMM or PC2700 DDR333 200 pin SO-DIMM. I would go with the less expensive since you will not benefit from the 2700 (i.e., the iBook will downclock it to the speed of the 2100). You can put 1 GB...

    Mac spoofing on AE

I assume that you are interested in securing your network or in learning. I can't help you with the latter. But, if you are interesting in securing, why not just use WPA? WPA is totally easy, but maybe you know that.

Do just one thing. Enable WPA encryption. In doing so, use any easy to remember 8 character alphnumeric password. Enable WPA using your AirPort Extreme's interface.

iMac making lots of noise after clean installing Tiger

It is possible that the "problem" is Spotlight indexing your drive. But, that process should stop pretty quickly. I am not sure if ATSServer is related to Spotlight though.

Good way to backup entire HD?

I am not sure how much room you have. But, you could use Disk Utility to make compressed disk images and, perhaps, get them on your external (maybe even a compressed disk image of your whole internal).

You can use "WhatSize" to check the sizes of your folders and documents (?)--at least your folders.
