    Missing fonts in Cocoa apps

I'm not sure this will help, but it can't hurt. Go to ~/Library/Caches, and delete all the files that start "com.apple.ATSServer..."

cmd-s fails at one page, no boot 10.1.5

If you boot up in OS 9 and delete the OS X System directory, that should enable you to install from the 10.1 CD.

    Special characters under MacOS X

In the brand of Unix that underlies OS X, the "#" character is used to "comment out" a line. In other words, the computer is instructed to ignore whatever follows the # on a line. That's probably why it's giving you problems.

    Question Mark

If you have the OS X installer CD available, boot up from it. Under Install in the menubar is an option Open Disk Utility. Try running its repair routine. If you know anyone who has the DiskWarrior CD, it is an excellent repair tool for OS X, even though it boots up in OS 9. Try running it...

    Defrag in OS X?

UFS disks don't need to be defragmented. HFS+ disks may need it, depending on what you run, how much RAM you have, and how much free disk space you have. The safest defragging tools is still good old PlusOptimizer from Alsoft, which comes on the DiskWarrior CD. The reason it's the best? It...

To fry or not to fry

"Sir, is that really true?" "Lad, that is what we in the Royal Navy call... a lie." People run Jaguar on all kinds of original iMacs, including the first generation models. I've used Jag on a 350MHz blueberry slot-loader manufactured in April 2000. No problems at all.

Easy way to print window contents

I learned a new trick today - a quick'n'easy way to create a printable text list of window contents, like the pre-OS X Print Window command: 1. Click on the window 2. Hit Command-a to select all contents 3. Hit Command-c to copy them 4. Open a new TextEdit blank document 5. Hit Command-v...

    Permissions help : 10.2

If you're comfortable using the Terminal, it's fairly easy to do. The command is: chmod -R 775 [path_to_target_folder] The 3 digits represent the levels of privilege for owner, group and others. In this example, 7 is full read-write-execute, 5 is read-execute. If you want to allow only...

Isn't the .mac free trial over?

LOL! I just got my daily delivery of headlines from the NY Times! Maybe Apple is having as much difficulty shutting down .mac accounts as it has keeping the .mac system up and running. ;)

Microsoft launches Switch Campaign! Why XP rules!

It's been exposed as a pack of lies. The "switcher" works for a PR company that M$ hired to do the campaign. :p

Nice steaming hot bowl of M$ BS anyone?

Slashdot and c|net did some digging. The picture is clipart. The "switcher" is a woman who works for a PR company that Micro$oft hired to do their "switch" campaign. Micro$oft's clumsy lies were all too easily exposed. That's why they pulled the page. :D

Having trouble installing Norton Personal Firewall 2

Okay, do you have crash logs? Open the Console in /Applications/Utilities, and select Enable Crash Reporting in its preferences. Then every time the firewall crashes, a crash log will be written to ~/Library/Logs. That should give an indication of what's going wrong.

Adjusting the 'GB level" of both 2 partitions?

You can do this, but you will lose all the data on both partitions. If the data is all backed up (or you don't want it), boot up from your OS X installer CD. Open Disk Utility, click on the Partition tab, set the partitions to the size you want, and go for it.

    Duplicate prefpanes...

Any time you have missing or duplicated preference panes, just delete the file ~/Library/Caches/com.apple preferencepanes.cache. That will solve the problem.

Having trouble installing Norton Personal Firewall 2

Have you turned off the built-in firewall? It's in System Preferences > Sharing. Once you turn it off, you may have to reboot your machine.

Aliens are eating my disk space

So much for the easy answer. ;) Another possibility is caches. Check the size of the files in /Library/Caches and /System/Library/Caches right after a restart, and again when you are running multiple applications.

Aliens are eating my disk space

Easiest step first. Double check to make sure that vm is on another partition. An upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2 switches it back to its default location on the bootup drive/partition.
