Apple will switch to Intel Itanium?

The next-generation Macs will be based on the IBM 970. There is absolutely no chance Apple will switch to Intel processors for several reasons. - Endian issues are a major bitch for developers. - Intel processors are horrible energy-hogs. - Intel processors are bloated by legacy cruft - just...

    Displaying ONE window using Carbon

Most of it looks okay, but I wonder about the window coordinates. It looks like you're making a window that's 0 x 0 pixels, and that might not work.

    finder - windowsize

Yes you can! You'll need Script Menu, the instructions laid out on this page and a run-only version of the following script saved in your ~/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts folder: on opening folder this_folder tell application "Finder" set zoomed of container window of this_folder to...

    what is this app?

Wow, so many complaints about the price of Konfabulator... Well check this out: It's only been out for about two weeks now, and already it's spawning an entirely new movement! It's amazingly easy to build these widgets, and since each one only takes a few days to build and refine almost all the...

    Which web-page editor??

Between GoLive and Dreamweaver MX, I choose Dreamweaver. I used to be a GoLive loyalist, but Dreamweaver has really grown up. It's more robust, more responsive, and not nearly as bloated. Not to mention it produces much cleaner HTML code, which is especially helpful if you're just learning HTML.

URL no longer in Get Info comments?

The feature you describe was provided by your web browser, not the OS itself. I'd guess that at least one of the popular browsers incorporates this feature. You should suggest this feature to the developers of Safari. (Use the weblog, don't email them.)

OS X updates on magazine cover CDs??

This is Apple's way of doing a kind of quality control. They used to allow the distribution of minor OS updates, QuickTime installers, and other things on magazine and user-group CDs but they ended this policy a few years ago. I'd venture that the logic behind this policy is that, if issues...

System Pref Startup Disk Selection resets itself

I had this problem with 10.0 all the time. It's been fixed since 10.1 but if you've got the gumption the time to go to Jaguar is now.

    What I want...any suggestions?

Like WavesLA I have (15) different folders full of aliases for each category of application I use - except that in my case all these category folders are in a folder called "LAUNCHER" and I just keep this one folder - with a pretty icon - in the Dock. What 15 categories could there be, you ask...

    MP3 Splitter?

You can do this with iTunes. - Select the track you want to split - Use Get Info and change the start/end time of the track (in the Options tab) - Choose 'Convert to MP3' from the Advanced menu After this you'll have two MP3 tracks with the same name, but the new one will be a portion of the...

    mouse not responding

Yep, it sounds like ADB support may have been dropped for 10.2.3 Server. Is it possible that Mac OS X Server has more stringent requirements than Mac OS X Client? I suggest you back up the following files in /System/Library/Extensions and then after updating to 10.2.3 try putting them back...

Virex Q: What is this folder?! "/sw/lib/libcrypto.0.9.6.dylib"

Correct. Virex wants to use a folder called "sw" in a similar manner to Fink. So the folder in question was indeed installed by Virex, and you should keep it.

    mouse not responding

Hmm, ADB devices should work. I have Jaguar on my 8500 and it's quite happy. Does the mouse work when you boot from the Jaguar CD? You could try using XPostFacto to install the "Old World" drivers and you might get ADB functionality back.

Why doesn't Mail recognize valid outbound domains??

I've only had this problem when the address in the outgoing FROM header was different than that of the SMTP server I was using. If you can see that the FROM header is correct for the server you're using then it's a mystery. Are you using version 1.2.3 of Mail?

    Annoying .DS_Store files!!!!

Hmm, maybe Transmit has an option not to upload invisible files....? The manual way to avoid it is to only drag files into the Transmit window and not folders. You can also trash the .DS_Store files on your own system from the Terminal like so: find . -name .DS_Store -exec rm -f There's also a...
